He Lights Up the Neighborhood

“You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. I have a friend, Malcolm, a Community of Christ member of many years. He lives a busy life and regularly helps his congregation financially and in many other ways.
However, he never has wanted to become active in worship services. He told me he just doesn’t like sitting down and listening or sharing in planned, organized worship services. He firmly believes in God, and although I rarely see Malcolm in church, I see him as a caring disciple who is always willing to help people in need.
Some years ago, doctors diagnosed him with cancer, and he spent much time in a cancer clinic. He has survived, although he has to have periodic clinical reviews. He realizes how God has blessed him, and he is grateful. He is so positive about how important prayer was for him during months of pain, distress, and worry.
One of Malcolm’s responses to this difficult time was to try to do something for others who find themselves with similar issues. In the past few years, he and his wife have lit up their garden with hundreds of Christmas lights on the trees, lawn, and buildings to produce a fantastic Christmas display.
This attracts many visitors to view and donate to the hospital that added years to Malcolm’s life. Through this offering, he seeks to symbolize hope.

Spiritual Practice
Deepen your breathing as you enter a few moments of silent presence to God. Pay attention first to your own life as you gently ask and notice, “What is most alive in me right now? What is being born in me?” After a few moments of silent listening, ask these questions of your community, the church, and the world. Notice how the Spirit is revealing new life and possibility as you prayerfully ask these questions over time.
