That’s a Nice Idea
By Carole Heathers of Stratford, Ontario, Canada

You are a good and faithful people, but sometimes you fail to see the power that is resident in your own story and fellowship. Look carefully, listen attentively, and sense the Spirit among you. Do not be unduly concerned with numbers. Be fervent in your witness, passionate in your discipleship, and vigorous in your labor on behalf of peace and justice. Where two or three such disciples form community, there will the Spirit be. Many will come to see.  -Doctrine and Covenants 162:8a-b

When Bryce decided to have weekly classes in beginner yoga and chair yoga at our congregation, I thought, “That’s a nice idea,” but I had no other expectations.

Bryce found an instructor who needed hours for his certification. Yoga has helped him through some very difficult times in his life, and it was easy to see his passion. He has his certification now but still conducts both classes for free!

His optimism is contagious.  Each week he starts by asking us to think of something we are grateful for to share at the end of class. This is where yoga becomes more than “a nice idea.” As we make our way around the circle sharing our gratitude, we get to know each other a little better. We have developed a bond of trust and friendship that makes us comfortable enough to ask for prayers or share the struggles of our lives. I am sure the beginners’ class in the evening is sharing a similar experience.

The effect of our “community” goes beyond our yoga circle. Some support our community breakfast that Bryce initiated in support of Victim Services. There are mitts and hats on our mitten tree for children in our community, wool donated to make vests for children in other countries, toys bought for the toy drive. All of this came from our little group, and the “nice idea” continues to spill over in blessing.

Prayer Phrase

I dwell in your presence.

Spiritual Practice

Prayer of Examen

Spend a few moments recalling your day. Let details, events, and conversations drift through your memory. Offer gratitude for the day and pray to be aware of how God was present. What did you notice or feel that brought meaning? Pay attention to moments when you felt least in harmony with God’s vision for creation. Offer a prayer of confession. Pay attention to moments when you felt most in harmony with God’s vision for creation. Pray to be even more aware of and responsive to God’s presence in the days ahead. Amen.
